"Textbooks" do not have to be large, expensive, and boring. Books from which you learn can be hands-on inexpensive, interesting, and short (usually 48 pages or less). These are the kinds of books an "average" reader--whether 6th grader or adult--can read through in a matter of one or two hours. What it takes to do this are books that are frills-free and to the point; narrowly focused on the specific topic.
This is what IVE Focus Texts are being developed to provide.
There are several kinds of IVE Focus Texts. These are defined by both format and content. The first is the student standard format, which is available in most places where books are sold. The second is the teacher format, also available in bookstores, which provides additional information to integrate this material into other class formats, such as Language Arts of Social Studies or to create stand-alone Study Skills classes. The third format is custom developed to be provided to schools through commercial sponsors.
In all cases, the physical format is essentially the same, wide margins for note-taking and 12- or 14-point type for easier reading. The major differences between the teacher edition and the other two is that most text pages are in black-and-white and the material this edition is specifically formatted so as to be photocopied so as to be provided to each individual student.
Further information--including self-publishing programs and opportunities for topic writers--on IVE Focus Texts now under development, is available by contacting on the Internet (focustext@iveleague.org), or by writing to IVE League Focus Texts, P.
