The Mosaics of St. Mary's of the Admiral in PalermoDumbarton Oaks Slobodan Çurciç ISBN: 0884021793 price: $85.00
The church of St. Mary of the Admiral in Palermo, commonly
known as La Martorana, is the foundation of George of Antioch, an
Orthodox Greek from Syria who rose to the highest position in the
service of Roger II, the first of the Norman kings of Sicily.
Admiral George built the church in the 1140s as a thanks-offering
to the Virgin and had it adorned with mosaics by artists from
Byzantium.
This famous decoration is published here for the first time in
its entirety. The text explores the iconographic and stylistic
sources on which the Greek mosaicists drew, the departures from
Byzantine norms due to local circumstances, and the relationship
of the decoration to contemporary work in the royal foundations.
